ATHLETE FAKED CANCER TREATMENT WITH IPHONE CABLE IN NOSE
In an incredible story, D.J. Carey, a star in the sport of hurling, has been found guilty of fraud in Ireland. The 54-year-old faked a cancer illness, convincing several people to provide him with financial assistance.
D.J. Carey, one of the most recognizable names in hurling—an outdoor Irish sport related to hockey—orchestrated a scam that spanned several years. He pretended to be battling cancer, even using an iPhone charger cable inserted into his nose to simulate medical treatment, thereby collecting thousands of euros for his supposed care.
Carey's Cancer Treatment Hoax
Between 2014 and 2022, Carey, 54, with a stellar career playing for Kilkenny, staged a deplorable charade that deceived hundreds, if not thousands, of people, including Irish magnate Denis O'Brien. Carey posed as a cancer patient, even publishing videos to seemingly corroborate his condition. In one clip, he appeared lying in bed with what he claimed was an oxygen tube in his nose.
It was later discovered that the "tube" was, in fact, a smartphone charger cable. Irish media report that Carey faces 21 charges and has pleaded guilty in court. His sentencing is scheduled for October 29. He remains free on bail, while his lawyers highlight the presence of genuine heart conditions within what they describe as a complex medical history, separate from the fraud.
