'RESCUE DELAYS': A WOMAN FROM BRESCIA DIES OF AN ILLNESS IN IBIZA
Her vacation with friends was over, and her thoughts were already turning homeward. But Francesca Ariazzi, 36, never made it back. She was struck down by a heart attack in Ibiza after several days in the hospital, where she never regained consciousness.
A bank employee at Bper, the young woman fell ill last Saturday while waiting for the ferry. Her condition immediately appeared desperate. According to eyewitness accounts, 40 minutes passed from her collapse at Ibiza port to Francesca's arrival at Can Misses hospital, where she was admitted to intensive care.
However, the Balearic health services, consulted by ANSA, specify that the ambulance's response time was '13 minutes'. This refers to 13 minutes from the first emergency call for a person "suffering from seizures" at Ibiza port.
At that point, a first ambulance with basic life support was dispatched to assist the woman. Twelve minutes after this first ambulance's departure, and thus one minute before its arrival on site, the emergency call center received a second call, still according to the local health services' reconstruction, stating that the tourist from Brescia "was not breathing."
The emergency plan for cardiorespiratory arrest cases was then activated, "which reduces intervention times by giving maximum priority" to the reported incident. And from the second call, 'four minutes' passed until the arrival of a new ambulance, which then transported Francesca Ariazzi to the hospital. On Wednesday evening, her clinical picture became irreversible, and doctors confirmed her death.
"I spoke by phone with both the Italian Ambassador to Madrid, Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi, and our Consul General in Barcelona, Gabriele Luca Fava, who is currently on the island of Ibiza. Both emphasized that they immediately provided maximum assistance on behalf of our authorities in Spain to the family of poor Francesca Ariazzi, and that just in the past few hours there was a phone call between Consul General Fava and our fellow citizen's sister," explains Brescia MP Giangiacomo Calovini of Fratelli d'Italia, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Chamber. "Regarding the alleged delay in rescue efforts, I believe it's too soon to make such evaluations, but if further doubts emerge in the coming days, I will not hesitate to question our Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ask the Spanish authorities for maximum clarity."
At her parents' request, the 36-year-old will be cremated in Ibiza within the next few hours, and her ashes will be brought back to Italy. "We are now waiting for the documentation from the Barcelona consulate to proceed with the repatriation," her family states.
'Delayed Response': Woman from Brescia Dies in Ibiza Following Medical Emergency
Her vacation with friends was coming to an end, and she was already thinking about returning home. But Francesca Ariazzi, 36, never made it back. She suffered a fatal heart attack in Ibiza after several days in the hospital, where she never regained consciousness.
A bank employee, Francesca felt unwell last Saturday while waiting for a ferry at Ibiza port. Her condition immediately seemed critical. According to witnesses, 40 minutes elapsed between her collapse and her arrival at Can Misses Hospital, where she was admitted to intensive care.
However, the Balearic health services, as confirmed to ANSA, state that the ambulance's response time was '13 minutes'. This duration is calculated from the initial emergency call reporting a person "suffering from seizures" at Ibiza port.
Following the first call, a basic life support ambulance was dispatched. Twelve minutes after its departure, and just one minute before its arrival on the scene, the emergency call center received a second call, again according to local health services, indicating that the tourist from Brescia "was not breathing."
This triggered an emergency protocol for cardiorespiratory arrest cases, designed to "reduce response times by giving maximum priority" to the reported incident. Within 'four minutes' of this second call, a new ambulance arrived and transported Francesca Ariazzi to the hospital. By Wednesday evening, her clinical condition had become irreversible, and doctors confirmed her death.
"I have spoken by phone with both the Italian Ambassador to Madrid, Giuseppe Buccino Grimaldi, and our Consul General in Barcelona, Gabriele Luca Fava, who is currently in Ibiza. Both stressed that they immediately provided the utmost assistance on behalf of our authorities in Spain to the family of the unfortunate Francesca Ariazzi, and that just hours ago, Consul General Fava spoke with our fellow citizen's sister," explained Giangiacomo Calovini, an MP from Brescia for Fratelli d'Italia and a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Chamber. "Regarding the alleged delay in emergency services, I believe it is too early to make such assessments. However, if further doubts emerge in the coming days, I will not hesitate to question our Ministry of Foreign Affairs to request maximum clarity from the Spanish authorities."
At her parents' request, the 36-year-old will be cremated in Ibiza within the next few hours, and her ashes will be repatriated to Italy. "We are now awaiting the documentation from the Barcelona consulate to proceed with the repatriation," her family confirmed.
