SPAIN: 30-YEAR-OLD ITALIAN MAN CRITICALLY INJURED IN LANZAROTE ASSAULT
Salvatore Sinagra, a 30-year-old man from Favignana, Italy, is fighting for his life in a hospital in Las Palmas, Canary Islands, after a brutal assault. He was reportedly severely beaten outside a bar in Lanzarote.
According to his father, Andrea Sinagra, who spoke to La Stampa, Salvatore had a minor disagreement with another young man inside a bar. He then stepped outside to smoke a cigarette, where the same individual allegedly attacked him brutally, possibly with brass knuckles. Salvatore was rushed to the hospital and underwent delicate head surgery to reduce a hematoma, but doctors remain guarded about his condition.
Sinagra Remains in Coma as Police Investigate
The 30-year-old's condition is stable after the operation, but he "is still in a coma," said his father, Andrea Sinagra, who is currently in Las Palmas. He confirmed receiving assistance from the consulate and stated that "the police are investigating" the incident, though no significant developments have been reported so far.
The municipal administration and the entire community of Favignana and the Egadi Islands have rallied around the family. "What happened is extremely serious," said Favignana Mayor Francesco Forgione. "We are close to Salvatore and his family in this difficult moment. We ask that all relevant institutions take action to shed full light on the incident and identify those responsible."
Father's Anguish and Plea for Answers
Salvatore's father, Andrea, expressed his anguish: "Salvatore is in a coma with a fractured skull because he crossed paths with the wrong person. Nobody knows who it is. The Spanish police tell me they are investigating, but so far there are no developments." Salvatore is in intensive care at the University Hospital of Gran Canaria Dr. Negrín, and the consul is reportedly in contact with the young man's family.
Investigators are requesting discretion, but this offers little comfort to the father. "They tell me investigations are ongoing, but I can't understand if there are any developments. One day they tell me one thing, the next that nothing is known. The doctors aren't saying anything precise, but they explained there's a risk of permanent consequences."
It appears that on the day of the tragedy, Salvatore was playing foosball with friends at a bar in Lanzarote when some other patrons approached. "There was an argument, but nothing serious, with a young man. That's what my son's friends told me," his father explained. "When he went outside to smoke, one of the young men he had met inside attacked him. Part of the scene was reportedly captured by external cameras."
In Favignana, the community is distraught. The island, usually quiet this time of year without tourists, has come together to support Salvatore and his family. The municipal administration also posted on its Facebook page, reiterating the severity of the incident and expressing hope that authorities will fully investigate and identify those responsible.
