Mulhouse, France – One person has died and five others were injured, including two police officers critically, in a knife attack that occurred near a covered market in Mulhouse, Alsace. Police have detained a 37-year-old Algerian suspect, who was on a terrorism watchlist.
The assailant reportedly shouted "Allahu Akbar" before carrying out the attack. French President Emmanuel Macron stated, "Since the national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office has taken charge of the investigation, there is no doubt that this was an Islamist terrorist act." French Premier François Bayrou added, "Fanaticism has struck again, and we are in mourning."
Suspect Identified and Injuries Detailed
The detained suspect is a 37-year-old man born in Algeria, listed on the FSPRT (File for the Prevention of Terrorist Radicalization). Local prosecutor Nicolas Heitz informed AFP that two municipal police officers sustained severe injuries, one to the carotid artery and the other to the chest. Three other municipal officers reportedly suffered minor injuries. The suspect had an existing order to leave France.
Anti-Terrorism Investigation Launched
The French national anti-terrorism prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the attack, with charges including "murder for terrorist purposes and attempted murders for terrorist purposes against public officials."
President Macron emphasized the government's and his own "determination to continue the work we have been carrying out for eight years to do everything possible to eradicate terrorism on our territory." He also confirmed that Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau would visit the scene and provide further details this evening.
