WHO ARE THE "MARANZA"? A TIKTOK-BORN PHENOMENON SPREADING ACROSS ITALY

Who are the

They move in groups, have a recognizable clothing style, and display an arrogant attitude. These young people roam cities and suburbs with the aim of bothering tourists, passersby, and peers on the streets, often engaging in assaults and dangerous challenges. This social phenomenon, which originated on social media, has now spread throughout the country, sparking controversy between those who fear them and those who mock them.

Origins and Characteristics of the "Maranza"

The "maranza" are groups of adolescents who harass and assault passersby, tourists, and and peers on city streets. Increasingly prevalent across Italy, these groups are involved in extortion, threats, and assaults. The phenomenon emerged from social media, particularly TikTok, gaining notoriety in early summer 2022.

Italy first took notice of their actions in June 2022 when a massive brawl involving thousands of young people on the beach of Castelnuovo del Garda forced police to intervene in riot gear. The youths had organized a gathering via TikTok, intended as a trap music event, which devolved into chaotic fighting.

The Riccione Case and Widespread Impact

Throughout the summer months of 2022, the "maranza" became increasingly known, and their actions affected various parts of the country. The case of Riccione is particularly famous: the Adriatic coastal city was overrun by these groups of youths who, for weeks, caused disruption by bothering citizens and tourists, especially targeting minors. Many public figures visiting Riccione also criticized the level of security in the Romagna resort during this period of the "maranza" explosion.

Despite appeals from frightened citizens and tourists, public opinion on social media is divided regarding the "maranza." On one side, there's negative judgment from those who view these groups' actions as vandalism; on the other, there's mockery from those who satirize their appearance and behavior.
