EU Commission Targets Temu: "Illegal Products on the Platform"
The EU's investigation, which included anonymous purchases, found numerous non-compliant items, including toys and electronic devices. The risk assessment conducted by the Chinese e-commerce giant in 2024 was deemed generic, with mitigation measures considered ineffective. If confirmed, these violations could lead to fines of up to 6% of annual turnover.
« We shop online, » emphasizes Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President for Technological Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy, « because we trust that products sold in our single market are safe and compliant with current regulations. Based on our preliminary assessment, Temu is far from evaluating risks to its users according to the standards set by the Digital Services Act. Consumer online safety is non-negotiable in the EU: our rules, including the Digital Services Act, underpin better online protection and a safer, fairer digital single market for all Europeans. »
